I think the answer to this changes every day. I’d say at the moment the lyrics to Mayer’s “Friends, Lovers or Nothing” resonates with me on another level.

It’s a basic level, basic concept. But I’m at the same place where John was when he probably wrote it.

It’s a difficult decision when a romance falls apart whether to keep going in some capacity. Stay as friends, stay as lovers…or just leave it. Be nothing. There is no magic ‘new’ thing that you and that person can muster. It’s just that simple choice of three.

And whenever I think about a particular situation I’ve got myself into…just the title of that song helps me make up my mind.

Acting, more so than any other form of art I can think of, is a team game. I need players in order to be able to express myself…to get those feelings, thoughts and emotions out of me I need at least one other actor there. A camera or audience. I can’t do it alone.

Not like a painter. Not like a musician. Not like a poet. Not like a dancer. Not like a sculptor. Not like a film maker. Not like a photographer.

All of the aforementioned need nothing more then themselves, and their chosen tools in order to channel themselves through.

But this choice I’ve made…the actor…I can’t get out all I need to unless I have someone there with me, and it’s a constant source of frustration because we don’t know when we’re going to be able to get it out at any given moment. We’re time bombs.

I think this could be the reason that in our personal lives, sometimes we get called ‘dramatic’. We’re like kettles with too much water in, all bubbling away with kinetic energy, fueled by a fire…but there’s only a tiny hole for that energy to come out of…and we boil over sometimes. It spills because it can’t be contained.

If a painter is sad, he need only pick up a brush, take it to his canvas, and use his colours and technique to create something that mirrors his internal.

If an actor is sad, he must wait until he’s given a script, he’s got to hope that the character he’s portraying in that script has a moment that correlates with the idea of sadness, then…maybe then, he can tap into the sad reserve and pull out what needs to come out.

Yeah, I think I’m gonna go back to school and learn how to paint…
